PLANET OF THE APES
DIRECTOR: Franklin J. Schaffner, 1968
"Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" PLANET OF THE APES is an outstanding science-fiction film that spawned four sequels, an animated cartoon series, a live-action TV series, bubble-gum cards, Halloween masks, and a rash of plastic models. The original film is still quite an achievement.
SYNOPSIS:
Heston (George Taylor) plays the commander of a lengthy outer-space mission that is interrupted when the spaceship crashes on an 'unknown planet' years into the future. One of the astronauts (Diane Stanley ) did not make the journey well---she died when the suspended animation unit failed. After a long walk through the forbidden zone (a desert wasteland) Heston with his fellow astronauts (Jeff Burton & Robert Gunner) find paradise. But something is strange about this paradise---they encounter-humans that are as primitive as their own ancestors. These humans are mute and live like animals. Heston soon decides it will not be long before he and his men have control over this planet, when out in the distance a loud, haunting sound echoes through the corn field. Suddenly all the humans start to run in a frighten frenzied. Heston and his men are swept up in the confusion, running from something fearsome-they know not what. Heston stubbles and when he looked up he is shocked to see APES riding on horses shooting the humans as if they are on a hunt!!! Burton (Dodge) is shot and Heston continues to run for his life in this nightmare hunt. Heston is shot in his neck but survives to be captured by the Apes. He is taken back to the Ape City where he is jailed like an animal. When he awakens he realizes that on this planet the Apes are the rulers and humans or no more important as wild animals to be hunted. Since he is unable to talk-this has helped Heston to survive. He is taken to Kim Hunter (Zira) who gives medical care to the humans. She can tell right off that Heston is different from most humans and gives him the nickname 'Bright Eyes'. Heston befriends her. Hunter and chimp-boyfriend Roddy McDowall (Cornelius) take Heston to their home where Heston explains by writing about his space travel to this planet. Their talk is interrupted by Maurice Evans (Dr Zaius) a high official, who believes that all humans will only bring destruction to their world and has Heston returned to his cage. There, Heston meets a beautiful female human-Linda Harrison (Nova) and they are placed in the same cage to 'mate'. Heston is horrified to be in such a place and tries desperately to communicate to the Apes--trying to write in the sand but having it covered over by Harrison in her child-like play. However a few letters were discovered by Evans and makes him suspicious of Heston. Hunter tries to help Heston with the help of McDowall, putting both their careers on the line. At one time---Heston over hears the he is to be used in a scientific experiment. This makes Heston run for his life. Heston runs away from the chasing Apes through out the city in an attempt to escape certain death. Finally when he is surrounded in the city square and captured in nets Heston's voice returns and he yells,"TAKE YOUR STICKING PAWS OFF ME--YOU DAMN DIRTY APE!!!" Horrified and shock to hear a human speak the Apes are stunned. Evans holds a trail for Heston with Hunter and McDowall trying to defend Heston. The Apes do not want to hear about another species in the galaxy that are as superior as Apes are. Evans claims that the 'sacred scrolls' hold all the truths and will NOT be questioned. McDowall asks to try to prove that humans might have been highly evolved on this planet in the past by having the trail moved to his archaeological dig where he has found evidence to prove his theory. Evans refuses and Heston with Harrison, Hunter & McDowall all escape secretly leaving Ape City and head for the 'forbidden zone' to McDowall's dig.Evans and his Gorilla troops soon follow in hopes to recapture Heston. In the excavated cave, Heston finds a doll that 'talks' proving that humans were intelligent on this planet in the past. Evans will hear none this evidence and refuses to believe what he sees---in his effort to keep the Ape society blind to the truth as their only protection against human's main reason for living-----to destroy each other. Meanwhile outside, a troop of Gorilla soldiers surround the cave. Gun-fire is heard and Heston grabs a rifle to fight back. Holding Evans as hostage, he bargains with the Apes to let himself with Harrison leave this place forever. Evans agrees and gives Heston a horse but warns Heston that he might not like what he finds. Heston thanks Hunter and McDowall for their help and leaves with Harrison on horseback across the beach---in hopes to make a new life for themselves away from the madness of the Apes. While riding along the beach---off to the distance a large, dark structure looms closer--half buried in the sand. As Heston rides closer to it, his face slowly shows what his eyes recognizes-------this structure is something he knows very well. With one look Heston knows he is back at home----he is back on Earth! Heston is horrified and falls down on his knees and pounds the sand with his fits yelling, "Finally, really did it! YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP!! DAMN YOU! G*D DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!'" The last shot the viewer sees is the Statue of Liberty half blown up.
PLANET OF THE APES is a success on many levels, with a witty, intelligent script by Rod Serling and an outstanding, hot-tempered, athletic performance from Charlton Heston makes it the number one SciFi classic for many. Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter are excellent as a pair of sympathetic ape scientist and doctor, respectively, with John Chambers's superb latex makeup allowing them a full range of expressive facial gestures. Chambers won a special Oscar for his extraordinary makeup work. None of the sequels (BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES) quite lived up to the original but have a huge following among SciFi fans. Hundreds of fansites are devoted to this series of movies with a remake of PLANET OF THE APES released in 2001. Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison had cameo roles the remake of their classic Sci-Fi film.

MY COMMENTS:
This is truly Chuck's best SciFi movie and my own favorite. His acting was superb, with all the physical challenges of this role, being in his mid forties---he could outrun the best Ape! I think PLANET OF THE APES and Chuck should've won an Oscar. The movie was ahead of it's time not only in the content of the storyline but also the makeup. Chuck's performance made this movie. No one else could've played Taylor more conviencely. When Chuck delivered those now famous lines: "Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" and "Damn you! Damn you all to Hell!"---they will always be linked to him and this movie as one of the most electrifying and shocking moments in SciFi movie history.
